Have you ever found yourself in a totally new and unfamiliar city, phone in hand with your well-planned itinerary and then swapping screens around to get your directions with Google Maps? How about a single phone app that acts not only as a guide to the city but also equipped with GPS navigation? If that sounds good then start looking at GPSmyCity!
You surely have guessed it by now – yes, Footprints Left Abroad is collaborating with GPSmyCity and selected articles are already available on the app! A promotional offer is also in the bag and is explained at the end of this article.
What is GPSMyCity?
Think of GPSmyCity (www.gpsmycity.com) as an app that combines the information of blog and travel articles together with a GPS navigation functionality.
That is to say, you not only can read my blog articles on the GPSmyCity app, but you can also get directed to the various attractions with the help of the GPS functionality. So you don’t have to toggle back and forth between the internet browser and Google Maps!
What’s more, you can do that all without the internet too! As long as you’ve downloaded the article in the app, you can use it fully offline!

How to use GPSmyCity?
Firstly, download the app by searching ‘GPSmyCity’ on Apple App Store or Google Play. You can also download it via the website at www.gpsmycity.com.
Then open the app and a list of articles will load based on your current location. Alternatively, you can also search other destinations using the search box at the top.
The articles can either be specially-written ‘City Walks‘, or general articles labeled as ‘Insider Tips‘. You can see the screenshots below to illustrate this.

Then click on the article that you are interested in. This will bring up the travel article for your viewing. For example, the screenshot below is my 3-Day Un-Beatle-ble Liverpool Itinerary for your first visit loaded into GPSmyCity.

You can generally read articles in the app at no cost. However, in order to make use of the GPS functionality built within the articles, you either have to pay a fee per article (normally around a couple of dollars) or pay for an annual subscription.
An annual subscription for either the ‘city walk’ or ‘insider tips’ articles costs $14.99. But if you wish to have GPS functionality to both, the annual subscription costs $20.99. All subscriptions come with a 3-day free trial so you can cancel within the period.
Accessing the GPS functionality
If you wish to head to a place of interest in the article, simply tap on the ‘Go There’ button and a GPS-equipped map will show up and guide you to the location.

In this way, you can read and follow my blog articles while you explore the city! It is just so simple and convenient!
And even if you prefer not to walk, you can also select to drive or cycle in the options.

If you want to have a full view of all the attractions mentioned in the blog article, all you have to do is click on the menu in the top right corner and then select ‘View attractions on map‘.

Create your own custom walk
You can also create your own walking route based on the attractions listed in my articles. All you have to do is go to the menu and select ‘Manage custom walks‘. Then you will be shown a map of all attractions featured in the blog article.
All you need to do is tap on those attractions and select those you wish to include in your custom walk. When you are done, tap on ‘Set Sights Order‘ where you can reorder the sequence of the attractions in your plan.
And you know what, this is actually the favourite part of the app, because I can select attractions that I am interested in. And then all I need to do is follow the directions! It can even tell you the estimated time that the walk will take you!
See the screenshots below to see how you can do so.
